Kirkcudbright benefits from a lovely coastal location yet is close to Castle Douglas. It is part of the Dee estuary and continues to be a working harbour. It has a mixed heritage from medieval times through to the great architectural Georgian and Victorian eras. It became fashionable in the late 19th Century, at a time when creativity was thriving and produced great writers, poets and artists. It wasn't just the big cities, Kirkcudbright also became a magnet for all things artisan, becoming affectionately labelled 'The Artist Town'. This legacy lives on with the many galleries, markets and independent shops.
