Port Ellen is on the south coast of Islay and overlooks the Oa Peninsula. As the island curves in at this point it enjoys wind shelter and a white sandy beach. The town has much history and is the second largest town on the island. There are a few independent shops, pubs and restaurants and a weekly market in peak season. Port Ellen is the island's main ferry port for the Calmac ferry service to and from the mainland.
