Newton Stewart is at the heart of Dumfries and Galloway and named after William Stewart, son of the Earl of Galloway. It was established as a result of industrialisation and its cotton and carpet industries. In recent times it has become a tourist attraction particularly with anglers for its salmon and trout fishing on the River Cree. It is also a wonderful base for ramblers and mountain bikers given its proximity to Galloway Forest Park. For wildlife lovers there are deer in the forest wild goats are found in the more craggy elevated parts of the park. There are some quaint shops and eateries to choose from.
