An Seann Sgoil (“The Old School” in Gaelic) offers luxury accommodation in four stunning 1 and 2 bedroom holiday cottages. They are ideal for couples and small family groups, and each boasts a 4* or 5* quality assurance award from the Scottish tourist board.

 

History of An Seann Sgoil Self Catering Islay

An Seann Sgoil Cottages Islay is a stone built  heritage building which served the community for over 100 years. Newton Primary School closed in 2003 and was empty for 12 years, before its was lovingly restored. The old school building and grounds, renamed “An Seann Sgoil”, is now a collection of unique luxury holiday cottages.

 

The cottages at An Seann Sgoil are within walking distance from Bridgend and Islay House Square with its hotels, shops and community garden. Otherwise the reliable local bus service stops right outside the door and will take you to most places on Islay.

 

Walks in beautiful ancient woodland start right on the doorstep and the 20 minute stroll to tranquil Loch Skerrols is not to be missed.

 

Being located at the centre of the island, this is the perfect base from which to explore. There are 5 whisky distilleries within a 10-15 minutes’ drive. The ancient seat of the Lords of the Isles at Finlaggan and the RSPB site at Loch Gruinart are nearby as are some of the island’s amazing beaches.

The Cottages

A good night’s sleep is guaranteed with 2000 pocket sprung mattresses, luxurious Christy’s 100% cotton bedlinen and high quality anti allergenic pillows and duvets.

There are panoramic views to enjoy through the large “school” windows. All cottages are equipped with HD Smart TVs, free WiFi and wireless bluetooth HiFi systems, as well as a collection of books and games for those occasional lazy days.

 

The Classroom

The lounge, kitchen and dining area are open plan and fully equipped. Use of a dishwasher, oven and microwave, induction hob, fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

There is also a ground floor cloakroom.
The bedroom with luxury super king size bed and ensuite shower room is upstairs and has lovely views over the surrounding countryside. The bed can also be made up as twin single beds.

The Music Room

The very spacious lounge and dining area has a dramatic double height ceiling and wood burning stove. There is also a ground floor cloakroom.

The Staff Room

A bright and airy ground floor one bedroom cottage. Sliding doors from both the lounge and bedroom open out onto a large private decked terrace overlooking the gardens with lovely views. Wheelchair accessible throughout.

 

The lounge, kitchen and dining area are open plan and fully equipped with a dishwasher, built-in oven and microwave, induction hob, fridge freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

 

The bedroom has a luxury super king size bed, which can also be made into twin single beds, and a large ensuite wet room with stunning contemporary fittings.

 

Availability and Rates 2025

The cottages are available for weekly rental or short stays of 3 days or longer.

Arrival and departure dates are completely flexible.

The rates include all bedding, towels and electricity.

Gardens

Outside there are breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside, with the Paps of Jura in the distance. The well maintained communal gardens include a sizeable lawn, ideal for games, and a large decked seating and al fresco dining area with a wood-fired pizza oven and stone built BBQ for guests to enjoy.

 

Parking

There is plenty off-street parking on site and a bike shed for bicycles.
There are 3 bicycles available for guest use on request.
