Temperance House Self Catering Islay

Temperance House Self Catering Islay is a modernised luxury self catering cottage in the beautiful conservation village of Port Charlotte; standing on the shores of Lochindaal .

Enjoy many of the local attractions, wild and remote scenery, stunning yet uncrowded beaches, world class golf course, excellent bird-watching sites and a resurgent Gaelic language and music scene.

Local amenities include a Post Office/shop, two hotels with bars, a range of dining options and the Museum of Islay Life. Bicycle hire is available from our next door neighbours.

 

Temperance House Port Charlotte Islay is named after the Temperance Hotel which was located in the building during the last century. The hotel was later converted into a family home with a Bakery on the ground floor. In 2011 we completed a full refurbishment and modernisation of the property which is now divided into two high standard self-catering properties providing luxury accommodation in the centre of the village, just opposite the Port Charlotte Hotel.

 

Main Apartment

 

The main apartment is on the first and second floors. The entrance hall has ample hanging space for outdoor clothing. A staircase leads to the first floor, opening into a spacious hallway.

 

There is a fitted kitchen with 2-oven electric Aga, a separate 2 ring hob and combination microwave/oven, fridge freezer and dishwasher. The kitchen/diner extends across the whole of the front of the building. There is a table seating 6 – 8 comfortably, plus a corner seating area with wall mounted 37” HD TV and iPod dock. This room enjoys stunning uninterrupted views over Port Charlotte beach to the lighthouse and then across Lochindaal and on to the Paps of Jura in the distance

 

There is a separate utility cupboard in the hallway housing a washing machine and dryer. This floor also has 2 shower /cloakrooms. To the rear of the apartment is a large sitting room with wood burning stove, another 37” HD TV, DVD player and 2 sofas. There are French windows giving access to a patio area and sloping rear garden. The patio is equipped with a barbecue, table and chairs.

 

A wooden staircase leads to the second floor, and another spacious light-filled hallway. There are 2 bedrooms to the front; one double and one twin. At the rear of the building is a 3rd bedroom with double bed and French windows onto a small balcony overlooking the garden. All of the bedrooms have hanging space, drawer space plus under-eaves space which is useful for storing luggage. Additionally, there is a family bathroom with an over-bath shower on this floor.

 

The house comes with central heating, FreeSat, and Free WiFi. The tariff includes bedding, towels and electricity. Given the staircases it may be unsuitable for the less mobile and for young children.

Parking is available at the front of the property.

 

Temperance House Self Catering Islay is a no-smoking property and unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets.

 

Studio

The studio apartment is suitable for one or two people. This is on the ground floor with direct street access. The front door leads to an open plan area running across the front of the building with 3 sash windows overlooking Loch Indaal. There are 2 sofas, an HD TV with FreeSat, a DVD player, iPod dock, Free WiFi and an open fireplace. The sleeping area has a double bed and ample storage space.

 

To the rear there is a single step up to a dining kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, fridge freezer, washer and dryer.

From here a door leads to a small private patio area to the rear. There is a shower room with a walk-in shower. The studio has underfloor heating throughout, with wooden flooring in the living and sleeping areas and tiles in the shower room and kitchen.

Parking is available at the front of the property and there is a wooden bench where guests can sit and enjoy the views across Loch Indaal.

Booking

Temperance House is our holiday home but when we are not staying there we are delighted to make it available to guests all year round.

Both apartments are available for weekly rental from Saturday to Saturday. Although Saturday is our preferred changeover day, we can be flexible, especially outside of the high season. We may also be able to accommodate shorter stays so please contact us to check availability

Getting Here

Islay can be reached by car ferry or plane.

Kennacraig Ferry Terminal is approximately 3 hours scenic drive from Glasgow. From here, the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry takes around 2 hours to make the crossing.
